A pair of cups that's made to be together. Wheel-thrown porcelain, painted by hand.
On the "A-sides," the cups feature two images of mother and child. One inspired (loosely!) by Pontormo's 16th century painting, 'Madonna and Child with Saint Joseph and Saint John the Baptist'. The other, by a sketch I made a couple of years back of a baby foot and a hand.
On the "B-sides" are lines from the poem 'The Sphinx' by Ralph Waldo Emerson: The babe by its mother Lies bathed in joy; Glide its hours uncounted,-- The sun is its toy
What else does a mother need other than her babe, and a babe other than its mother?
The cups are sold as a pair. Each cup is approximately 9 cm tall and 9 cm across (12 cm including the handle). Trimmed flat foot and signed underneath.
